Crab meat is very popular for many dishes including sushi. The problem with crab meat is that it is fairly expensive. To combat this problem, imitation crab meat was created in the 1970's to undercut the price of real crab meat. This substitute quickly became popular and is now seen across the world. Imitation crab meat is not made with crab but is made to taste and feel exactly the same. In this article I will compare both of them.
Real crab meat comes directly from the crab. The crab is harvested from the ocean and that is exactly what you get. Imitation crab meat however is made from many different fish that are blended and put together. This meat is mixed with other ingredients and dyes to create an almost identical version of crab meat. Real crab meat is much more expensive then the imitation version which is why imitation crab meat has become so popular. Real crab meat is far more nutritional which makes it very appealing to those that are trying to live a healthy lifestyle. "Real crab meat has nearly three times the amount of protein as imitation crab, which gets most of its calories from carbs. Plus, real crab is much higher in vitamins and minerals than imitation crab"(Fincher). The taste and look of crab meat and imitation crab meat are very similar. Most people will not be able to tell the difference unless they look at the packaging.
Choosing between crab meat and imitation crab meat is very simple. It depends what you value when you are shopping. If you prefer to be healthier and price isn't important than real crab meat will be your best choice. If you are on a budget or you do not care about the nutrition facts then you should buy imitation crab meat.
