Rant On Tipping Catering Companies

Tipping is somewhat controversial in today's society in the United States. In most other countries it is never done and they don't understand tipping culture. Some people do not feel like they should pay more for the meal and others feel like it is common courtesy to show appreciation to those that delivered what they asked. My opinion for the catering industry is you should not expect tips.

As a caterer you should charge enough to make ends meet without a tip. Tipping should be up to the customers discretion and should not be expected. There are certain instances where you don't need to be tipped. If you do a poor job or mess something up there is no need to for the customer to pay you more. Also some people are on a very thin budget and may not to be able to afford a tip. Some caterers only make the food and do not help set up for the event. Why should the customer pay you more when you only cooked the food. You don't tip the chef at the restaurant so why would they tip you. When people add extra value to their catering business they could assume to be tipped but not expect it. Extra value could be serving the food, setting up the event, and giving advice. Even with those mentioned it should be included in your price and the customer can tip if they want to. I've seen too many instances when people expect tips and then get upset when they do not get them. I have seen people yell and throw a fit because of it. This makes your business look unprofessional and word will spread fast. The simplest way to avoid getting upset over not getting a tip is to not expect it at all.
